Real World Successes
These are real-world success stories covering a variety of scenarios. If we you wish to speak directly to any of these lawyers, we’d be happy to put you in touch.
Can you see yourself in any of these success stories?
1
Good to Great
When I began working with this founder, he had already attained a level of success in building his firm. He brought me on to help him create a path to partnership so that his associates could see their future at the firm.
We started there and kept going. I worked with him, his office managers, the lawyers, and several paralegals. Soon after our two-year mandate concluded, he was recognized as the fastest-growing law firm in his city and named among the 400 fastest-growing companies in the country by a leading national publication. He is still growing.

Doing Law Her Way
Frustrated with the old model, one of my most entrepreneurial clients left a reasonably large firm to start her own. We began working together soon after she founded her firm. We built marketing, HR, systems, and processes.
She quickly took to all of it. When we started, her firm was pretty lean, with her, a couple of paralegals, and admin support.
Having made her life-work balance a priority, she didn’t stop there. As she grew her firm, she extended that to all lawyers and support staff operating on a four-day workweek. Fast-forward 10 years, she has grown her firm into one of the largest in her field, garnered several awards, and is a leader in law firm models and culture.

Investments Pay Off
This veteran law firm owner hired me after reading my first book on vacation. My mandate was to coach his 1st-year associate and law clerk in business development. This was indeed a turning point for my coaching practice. Having primarily worked with larger firms until this point, the fact that this smaller firm owner was willing to invest in his law clerk and junior associate turned a light bulb on.
Both mandates were a great success. But the real story is his law clerk. During the year we worked together, she brought in a substantial amount of business and increased her docketing by 25% following my tips. Fast-forward 10 years, and that very same law clerk is now the operations director of his firm. Wow. That investment paid off.

Next Level
My first client, a junior partner at a more prominent regional firm, was already doing well but wanted to take his litigation practice to a new level. He said, “I am already a good lawyer. I don’t need help with that. I chose you over other coaches because you have what I want: that entrepreneurial drive and mindset.”
Still in his early 40s, this partner became the firm’s number one earner and business generator, landing the most extensive litigation file in its 100-year history.

Built to Endure
Working with these two co-founding partners just after they had marked their first year in business, we quickly set out to build systems, templates, and processes that would scale, allowing them to grow effortlessly.
We examined their roles and how they could complement each other in running their firm. We also discussed building their team around their strengths for lasting growth. Fast-forward through the pandemic, three maternity leaves and one severe medical scare continue to grow and flourish because of that foundational work we did early on.

Taking a Bold Leap
This partner at a national firm made a bold move just six weeks before the world went into lockdown in March 2020. She had left her very comfortable equity partnership at a boutique firm, where she did not need to grow her book of business, as the work just flowed to her. In her new role, she was not only responsible for developing her practice but also tasked with growing the practice group. We had a consultation on the Tuesday of the week of the shutdown.
I had done much transition work, but never in lockdown, where face-to-face meetings were prohibited. In transition, it’s imperative to build relationships with your new partners and new staff and learn the firm’s policies and procedures. This can be challenging in the bet of times. These challenges were made even more daunting with the lockdown. New firm, new partners, new staff, new everything, no face-to-face, and a mandate to grow while working from home and caring for her two daughters as a single mother. WOW!
Not only did she transition successfully, but she also went on to take on more responsibility at the national practice group level. It is truly astonishing what she accomplished during one of the most trying times.

Recapturing Career Fulfillment
One of my earliest experiences with transition coaching was when I was brought in to a large regional firm to assist a 5-year call associate. He was extremely unhappy in his capacity as a litigator but didn’t know where or what to do. He loved the firm and the people but hated his practice.
We set out to clarify his values, what was important to him, and what he was passionate about. In a very short time, I was able to help him transition to an IP solicitor practice. He caught up on the partner track within a year and went on to a fulfilling career. How much did the firm save by investing in coaching to retain him? It’s hard to say, but it’s likely a significant number.

Becoming the ‘Go-To’ Partner
This sizeable regional firm brought me in to assist one of their partners in transitioning back to practice after taking a medical leave. The original mandate was to get him back on track. While collaborating to develop his team and practice, he surpassed all expectations. He established a strong team and gained recognition among associates as ‘the partner who they all wanted to work with.’
Near the end of this 1-year mandate, he said on our coaching call, “I can’t believe it. I am truly only doing the work I love”. That is because he focused on delegating, mentoring, and involving his associates in the client relationships.
